Quito, Ecuador - On Wednesday, Federal Immigration authorities in Ecuador confirmed that Colombian Kingpin Ramón Quintero Sanclemente, 51, had been extradited to Colombia. Colonel Edwin Báez, Director of Immigration Enforcement in Ecuador said, Quintero-Sanclemente, one of the most wanted Colombian drug lords in the world was arrested Tuesday in a cafeteria North of the capitol during an immigration sweep looking for undocumented immigrants. "His captured is a benefit to the whole world and the joint cooperative law enforcement efforts by the Colombian military police and the Ecuadorian police and government led to his arrest," Colonel Báez said.
Quintero-Sanclemente is originally from Buga, Colombia and was wanted for more than 20 years. He is suspected of ordering the multiple murders of Colombian law enforcement officials and rival cartel members.
Authorities also arrested Adrián Zambrano Sáenz and are trying to confirm his identity. If Sáenz turns out to be a Colombian national, he will be extradited, according to Colonel Báez.
Quintero-Sanclemente when arrested was accompanied by his daughter, nephew, Sáenz and another man from Uruguay. Quintero-Sanclemente had $3,500 U.S. dollars on him and a buckle knife, and Sáenz had $2,600 U.S. on him, and a laptop computer, which was confiscated.
The U.S. Drug and Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Colombian military police had been tracking Quintero-Sanclemente for about a year. Information from an informant led to his whereabouts and arrest, and a reward of $5 million U.S. dollars will be collected.
The U.S. had indicted Quintero-Sanclemente in 1999 for drug trafficking and money laundering and had issued an extradition order request to the Colombian government. The Colombian government is expected to extradite Quintero-Sanclemente to the U.S.
The U.S. Department of State says, Ramon Quintero-Sanclemente is one of the principal leaders of the Norte Valle Cartel (NVC). The NVC not only produces its own drugs, but also purchases drug from reliable sources in the Bandas Criminales (BACRIM) or Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC). The NVC maintains international drug distribution contacts, including alliances with powerful Mexican cartels. Quintero-Sanclemente’s drug trafficking organization is responsible for obtaining more than 50 metric tons of cocaine annually from clandestine labs in Colombia to export to Mexico, the United States and Europe. Quintero-Sanclemente has been linked to several cocaine seizures in the United States.
Ramón Quintero Sanclemente is the leader of the Quintero-Sanclemente drug trafficking organization. Quintero-Sanclemente commands and directs the organization, deploys its enforcement operatives, and is said to be the most violent member of the organization. Quintero-Sanclemente is charged in a 2008 indictment in the Southern District of Florida, according to the U.S. Department of State.
