Milwaukee - On early Sunday, a 27-year-old man suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound by police after failing to drop his shotgun. A 55-year-old Milwaukee police sergeant and an officer responded to an emergency call at 2:42 a.m. of a man wielding a shotgun and threatening his girlfriend at the 700 block of S. 39th St. in the south side.
The sergeant confronted the suspect and ordered him to drop the shotgun. The suspect failed to comply and the sergeant fired his handgun at the suspect, striking him once to stop the threat, according to police.
The suspect who sufffered a non-life threatening wound was taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment and was later released to police custody. No one else was reported injured.
The 2nd Police District station sergeant has 30 years of service with the department. The suspect is lucky to be alive, since police are trained to fatally stop an armed suspect when threaten.
The sergeant who is being hailed as a hero for sparing the suspect's life was put on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation conducted by the Milwaukee Police Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office.
