Ponte Chiasso, Italy - On Sunday, a 53-year-old man and his family were detained on a police routine stop on Easter Sunday after it was discovered they were attempting to smuggle ingot gold bars worth at least $6.8 million (£4.5M) into Switzerland. Italian financial police noticed the man and his family became nervous while giving conflicting statements.
Police took them to a nearby police station and then searched the vehicle. They discovered two hidden compartments under the front seat and were able to recover 12 gold bars wrapped in old newspaper and cellotape.
The Italian suspect lives in Switzerland and works for a Swiss company. He has not provided any information or documentation that the gold is his or belongs to the company where he is employed at. The suspect is facing money laundering charges, according to Italian police.
The gold bullion remains in police custody.
