Milwaukee, WI - On Sunday, the 93 hot degree weather with 72% humidity in the air and blistering windy sunny sky failed to keep thousands of Hispanics from attending the third annual Milwaukee Puerto Rican Festival sponsored by local El Conquistador Newspaper and Yussef Morales, the main festival organizer who in 2013 began the festival at the underpass of the S. 35 Street viaduct in the Southside. Morales posted on his Facebook account that at least 4,000 people attended Sunday's event.
Last year, more than 800 people participated. This year, the venue included seven hours of music entertainment and performances that ended with the band Nabori. The event also included a car show. The food vendors had long lines during the afternoon and some ran out of food by 4:00 p.m. The vendors weren't expecting thousands to show up at the event.
Security at the festival was well coordinated by the festival organizers, security was provided by Milwaukee police, festival volunteer security, Milwaukee County Sheriff deputies and the Latino Peace Officers Association (LPOA, which does security at the three day Mexican Fiesta). A brief altercation by several men around 5:11 p.m. was quickly quashed by security and officers. The festival went on and ended with the Nabori band at 7:00 p.m.
